July 6th. - Masada,

Today is a day to remember; truly we have been in the wilderness!

We started at Masada, which was another of Herod's "winter" retreats/ fortresses. It was a massive undertaking with pools, baths, etc. Once Herod died, it went into disrepair and finally became the last stand of the Zealots. Rome used Jewish slave labor to build a siege ramp, to reach the Zealots. Once they knew they lost, they killed their families and then themselves, after burning supplies. They would rather die than submit to slavery to Rome.

We took the tram up and down. There were many people walking down the trail and a few walking up; they did not look too well, walking in the heat.
